“I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me.”

You remember Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s legendary relationship from 2019 to 2022. We’ll find out in textbooks someday.

And then we saw them do that after people criticized their relationship…

We’ve been through a lot with these two.

When they announced (in a joint statement) that they were splitting up, we all thought, “OMG??!”

Camila told Zane Lowe about the split earlier this month. “My priorities have fluctuated and my focus has shifted throughout my life,” she said. “Even now while I’m in promo mode – honestly, if I’m not having fun, what’s the freaking point? I think priorities shift as you get older. And I feel like that was the case for both of us.”

“Because we both started so young too, we’re really learning how to become healthy adults,” she added. “And that sometimes means the focus isn’t on the career. And that’s okay.”

And aside from his upbeat, beautiful breakup song “It’ll Be Okay,” we never really heard Shawn’s perspective — until this weekend. He posted this behind-the-scenes clip of him talking about life after the breakup at his piano.

“A lot of things that also resonate in the lyrics for me are like ‘Oh damn.’ You know, you don’t realize when you break up with someone you think it’s the right thing to do,” Shawn said.

“You don’t realize all the shit that follows. For example, who do I call if I’m having a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m fucking on the brink?”

“I think that’s the reality that kind of hit me,” he continued. “It’s like, ‘Oh, I’m on my own now,'” he said.

“Now I feel like I’m finally on my own, and I hate that. That’s my reality, you know?”

Shawn has always been vocal about his anxiety and mental health, and most recently how the pandemic has affected it.

“The silence [of the pandemic] brought to the surface a lot of anxiety that I had to work through, and on the other hand, that was a really reflective time for me to be like, ‘Oh, that’s what I did. This is crazy,” he told Zane in 2020. “That’s what I can do. This is art. That’s bigger than me.”

Luckily, Shawn is in therapy, Camila revealed last year, so he’s in good hands. I always love it when celebrities are very open about their mental health issues and realities.

Thank you for sharing your reality and perspective – and for always being so open, Shawn. Hold on buddy!
