Approval Rating for Shazam! God’s Wrath.

Sophie Butcher of Empire Magazine wrote:

“Bigger, weirder and funnier than the first, the second Shazam! continues to entertain despite its tiresome narrative.”

Owen Gleiberman of Variety criticized:

“The real story here is that of a superhero saga that seemed to have the potential for tremendous eccentricity and charm, and ended up being crushed into the mold of every other superhero franchise.”

IndieWire’s Katie Erbland said:

“Although Shazam! Wrath of Gods doesn’t quite recapture the dizzying fun of the first film, its humor, sweetness and deliciously human heroes remain bright spots in a genre often obsessed with darkness.

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote:

“This sequel doesn’t have much of the appeal of its predecessor. While the film delivers elaborate action sets, interesting villains, and the worldsaving story mechanics that one would expect from the comic book film genre, it lacks some of the magic.”

Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent (UK) said:

“Wrath of God falls into the frustrating middle ground: a film that has promise but feels too chaotic and corporate to win affection.”

In his criticism of legion, Jacqueline Sousa also argued that the film, while not as disastrous as Adam Black, does not transcend the mediocrity that currently permeates much of the superhero genre:

“[…] The second Shazam film ends up being another victim of a culture industry that cares more about making you vibrate with a cutesy reference than at least trying to innovate a format that’s been thrown into theaters with every new project comes, seems exhausted.”

Shazam! God’s Wrath officially hits theaters tomorrow March 16th.
