Momma Malone stayed with vet Emily Bewley
A crowded animal shelter in Kentucky (USA) was home to a tiny terrier dog who needed help with a rapidly growing belly. The already overburdened shelter would not cope if she gave birth there.
Luckily, veterinarians from the Kentucky Humane Society heard the story and rushed to help. The dog, now named Momma Malone, was examined and vets determined she would likely have to give birth by caesarean section.
“I was excited but also worried,” vet Emily Bewley, who gave birth to the puppies, told The Dodo. “We were grateful that she came to the Kentucky Humane Society where we could safely deposit her puppies.”
Mom stayed home with Emily during the final days of her pregnancy. She knew there were a lot of pups around and made sure the whole team was ready to help.
“On the way to the shelter, my son stayed with her in the back seat of the car to comfort her,” the vet said. “Meanwhile the veterinary team was preparing everyone at the shelter because we knew there would be a lot of puppies and we would need all hands. When we arrived at the shelter, the operation took only 20 minutes.”
Everyone cheered when they saw the new family. Small dogs usually give birth to between two and five puppies, but Momma Malone gave birth to nine healthy puppies.
Initial concerns were that the dog would have trouble bonding with her babies, especially after having a csection, but everyone was thrilled to find the new mother had no problem with it and loved all of her puppies.
“When she woke up, she took over [a maternidade] like I’ve done before, although I’m sure it’s the first time,” Emily said. “She takes good care of everyone.”
Mom and the puppies will stay at the shelter until March, when they will be ready to find new families.
