Made from cassava and cheese, the buñuelos are now iconic and a symbol of the personal struggles that the Nicaraguan beauty had to fight to become a working woman, but they are also an indicator of Palacios’ pride, adding a touch of culinary and musical wealth convey country of origin.

The Nicaraguan dessert called Buñuelo has never been more popular nationally and internationally as it is associated with the life story of the Nicaraguan woman, considered the most beautiful woman in the world.

Hosts of a child-led television channel Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo mocked the Nicaraguan representative for selling buñuelos—a dessert made from cassava with curds or cheese and honey—to finance her studies.
“Miss Buñuelos,” said one of the presenters, while Sandinista sympathizers called her “Miss Tranquera” on social media for taking part in an anti-government march in 2018.
The young woman in whom Nicaraguans saw themselves reflected is a social communications graduate from the Jesuit Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in Managua, which was closed by authorities last August after being accused of being a “center of terrorism.” The beauty still doesn’t have a return date to Nicaragua.
