The right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP) is expected to have increased its dominance in Swiss parliamentary elections. According to Swiss television projections, the party that wants to limit immigration has a turnout of 29 percent. The last polling stations closed today at 12 pm.
According to the numbers, the SVP managed to practically compensate for the defeats in the last elections for the National Council. At that time, the party led by billionaire Christoph Blocher obtained 25.6%.
According to projections, the Greens performed significantly worse than before. After a record 13.2 percent in the 2019 elections, which was heavily influenced by climate discussions, their percentage has now fallen to 9.1 percent. The Social Democrats made slight gains. Overall, the large chamber of the Swiss Parliament is expected to move slightly to the right.
Experts classify the influence of elections on political decisions in the coming years as low. The parties’ shares in the seven-member coalition government are unlikely to be affected in December’s parliamentary elections.
More important for politics in Switzerland than elections are the quarterly referendums on issues that limit the scope of action of the government and parliament. This is also reflected in electoral participation. According to projections, only 46.5 percent of those eligible to vote went to the polls today.
