Ship sank between South Korea and Japan: sailors recovered

More than a dozen crew members were pulled from the water during search and rescue operations after a freighter sank in the sea between South Korea and Japan.

At least 14 sailors were rescued in the early afternoon (local time), a spokesman for the South Korean Coast Guard said. However, it is unclear how many of them are still alive.

Six were recovered by the South Korean coast guard and the rest by the Japanese coast guard and nearby civilian ships. According to preliminary information, 22 people were on board the 6,551-tonne Jin Tian freighter, registered in Hong Kong, which was transporting timber.

The ship made an emergency call about 150 kilometers southeast of the South Korean island of Jeju in the morning (local time), South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. When the coast guard arrived at the targeted location, the ship had already sunk into the sea. The reason for this is not clear.
