The couple immediately called the police, who arrived at the scene: The dog, a pit bull mix puppy, was aggressive when officers took him out of the closet. Understandable behavior as the animal was visibly malnourished and frightened. Police said it was clear “no one had looked after him for quite some time” and that he was urgently referred to vets.

Initial investigations show that the dog did not belong to the previous owners of the house, but belonged to two homeless people who had lived in the house for the past few months, when it was now vacant.

The two homeless people have already been identified and could be charged with animal cruelty or aggravated animal cruelty depending on the dog’s condition. A conviction could result in a $500 fine for each violation, plus medical expenses. In addition, the owner can be banned from owning or working with an animal for five years.
