Ohtani hits 26th home run of the season, leading in MLB

6:42 a.m. UTC

ANAHEIM — As the Angels brace for the long haul and open up a longer string of local games that could go a long way in defining their season, they’re not shying away from drama.

On a night when Mike Trout was down 3-0 with three strikeouts, he still hit the game-winning run on a wild pitch late in the ninth inning for a 2-1 walkoff win over the White Sox.

Shohei Ohtani showed his anticipation for 21 straight games in Southern California over 28 days when he hit a massive home run in the fourth inning. Reid Detmers delivered an outing that was a high in its own right, allowing for a two-hit, two-walk run over seven innings with 10 strikeouts.

The Angels’ housewarming party on Monday showed that a bit of beach weather next month could provide the inspiration they need. The club plays 16 home games over the next four weeks, including away series against the Dodgers and Padres. Add in the all-star break and it’s time to stock the cupboards with snacks.

“It’s a good time to regroup and be with family,” said Trout, who had his young son by his locker after the game.

The Angels’ game-winning rally began when both Trout and Ohtani walked to open the end of the ninth pitch. Things heated up when Trout and Ohtani pulled off a double steal.

It was complete when Trout went headfirst into home plate after a wild pitch from Aaron Bummer.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Angels became the first team in the live ball era (since 1920) to have each of their first two walkoff wins of the season come from a wild pitch or a pass ball.

It’s exactly the kind of home cooking the club is looking for.

“We’re playing a lot of good teams next month but the fact of the matter is we’re at home and not travelling,” said manager Phil Nevin. “We can work a little more and feel good here. And hopefully we win a lot of baseball games.”

Mike Moustakas made his Angels debut Monday, scoring one in three at-bats. Moustakas was traded from the Rockies on Sunday and was on home plate when Trout hit the game-winning run.

“You’re sitting there and you’re like, ‘Wow, that’s a pretty cool moment for Moose,'” Nevin said of Moustakas, who could be the hero in his Angels debut. “He even said in there [that] Mike finished him off. Any chance of winning is great.”

The White Sox gained the upper hand early on as red-hot Luis Robert Jr. showed why he was named American League Player of the Week with a home run in the first inning. It was Robert’s third home run in a span of four at-bats since Sunday.

But Detmers showed his own form as he went six scoreless innings after the first frame and turned in his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. After hitting the home run, he eliminated ten straight batters and only allowed two hits and two walks in his seven innings.

The Angels equalized in the fourth inning when Ohtani hit a home run into right midfield, his 26th hit of the MLB season.

White Sox starter Dylan Cease was essentially as effective as Detmers, giving up one run on five hits in more than six innings with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

The expected duel of pitchers came to fruition, as Detmers now had a 1.05 ERA and 34 strikeouts in his last four starts, down from a 5.15 ERA in his first ten starts of the season.

More recently, he’s been inspired by the pitching performances of the Dodgers’ Ohtani and Clayton Kershaw. Ohtani was all about how to use a slider effectively, and Kershaw was all about pinpoint control of the likely future Hall of Famer.

“I just rule the zone and that was great,” Detmers said of his last four starts. “I throw everything in the zone and then expand it when I need it.”

Three of those four most recent launches have been at home, and more are in the pipeline.

“Of course we have a good squad,” said Detmers. “You don’t always see it, but that’s baseball. We just have to put our heads down and move on. There’s not much behind it.”
