Shootings in the US state of Maine left 22 people dead and “many more” injured on Wednesday evening, said Lewiston City Councilman Robert McCarthy. According to local police, the suspect responsible for the attack remains at large.
The Lewiston Police Department released a statement on its Facebook page confirming that it is dealing with an active shooter who was reportedly active at two different areas: Schemenges Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley in the Region.
Authorities appealed to the community, asking them to avoid roads to allow emergency teams quick access to hospitals.
A statewide health network said it was responding to a “mass shooting” and released a statement that Central Maine Healthcare was coordinating with local hospitals to receive affected patients.
Given the situation, the government issued a warning to dormitories, advising residents to seek safe shelter and stay in their homes. In addition, shops and businesses in the area have been ordered to temporarily close their doors.
Law enforcement is conducting an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the attack, including the possibility that a second perpetrator was involved. The City of Lewiston is working together to find answers and support the victims of this tragic event.
