Media representatives from the NAM countries, meeting as part of Shusha 2023, made a case for promoting cooperation on communication issues in response to the agreements reached at the recent Baku summit.
Participants called on Azerbaijan, in its capacity as the movement’s president, to refer the communication platform initiative to the consultation of member states.
They also recognized the growing role of the media in modern times and the need for accurate, balanced and honest media reporting.
According to the statement, in addition to strengthening infrastructure, including technology, it also emphasizes the need to receive and share truthful information about the non-aligned and promote the culture and its values.
At the same time, they recalled the text of the 2019 Baku Summit, which rejected the dissemination of discriminatory and distorted messages, fake news and deceiving the public about the reality of developing countries.
According to the statement, the use of the press to hate and campaign against members of the NAM, particularly to defame religion, culture and symbols, must be stopped.
Opening the first edition of the Global Media Forum here, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev admitted that the Non-Aligned Movement could possibly make an appeal to the press.
Addressing more than 250 representatives from 120 media outlets from 50 nations, Aliyev called for further cooperation with the possible meeting before the presidency is handed over to Uganda next year.
This first global media forum in Shusha in the south-west of the Nagorno-Karabakh region was held in the congress hall of the modern Susa hotel under the motto “New media in the age of the fourth industrial revolution”.
Since Friday, the future of media, new tools for journalism and its role in the digital age, sustainability and effective communication in public administration and the impact on local and international audiences have been discussed.
