UNITED STATES – An extremis rescue that is temporary but essential. Joe Biden welcomed the agreement reached on Saturday, September 30, to temporarily continue funding the federal administration and thus avoid last-minute paralysis.
After a last-minute change of heart by the House of Representatives, the US Senate passed an emergency measure just three hours before the shutdown; This would have left civil servants unemployed and reduced food aid for certain recipients.
The American president immediately called on Congress to approve aid for Ukraine, which is excluded from the agreement, as quickly as possible. “We cannot allow American support for Ukraine to be interrupted under any circumstances,” he said in a statement. “I expect the President of Congress to fulfill his commitment to the Ukrainian people and ensure that the necessary support is accepted to help Ukraine at this critical moment,” Joe Biden added, referring to the Republican leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.
Lawmakers are expected to consider and vote on this separate bill for $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. According to American media, a vote could take place early next week. If this very point is not included in the agreement passed on Saturday, it is because Republicans close to Donald Trump opposed it despite the support of moderate Republicans, including Kevin McCarthy.
Joe Biden added that the agreement to avoid government paralysis was “good news for the American people.” However, “we should never have been in this situation,” he added.
