Signing of an agreement on keeping Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus

Minsk, May 25 (Prensa Latina) Defense ministers of Russia and Belarus Sergei Shoigu and Viktor Khrenin signed documents in this capital to maintain the presence of Russian nuclear weapons in the country, the military ministry reported today.

“During the meeting, it was decided to extend the deployment of Russian non-strategic nuclear weapons in a special storage facility on the territory of Belarus,” the ministry’s press service said.

Shoigu stressed that the measures implemented by both nations “are in line with all existing international legal obligations.”

During the meeting, the ministers discussed the politico-military situation and technical cooperation issues, as well as an assessment of the current environment.

On March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that, at the request of the Belarusian side, Moscow would deploy its tactical nuclear weapons in that neighboring state, just as the United States is doing on the soil of its allies.

According to Putin, the construction of a promenade for storing tactical nuclear weapons, including the Iskander missile system, should be completed on July 1.
