Signs for the climate: Earth Hour 2022 has begun
In New Zealand, among others The Sky Tower and Auckland Harbor Bridge and the parliament in the capital of Wellington were shrouded in darkness. This year, we focus not only on protecting the planet, but also on the desire for peace in Ukraine and around the world.
“To build a future in harmony with nature, we also need peace between people,” said Marco Lambertini, WWF International CEO. “For this reason, this year’s Earth Hour offers a moment of solidarity with all nations suffering from wars and conflicts around the world.”
Sydney Opera House for the sixteenth time in Earth Hour
In Australia, where Earth Hour began in 2007, the world-famous Sydney Opera House has been there for 16 consecutive years. “As a symbol of modern Australia and the first Australian performing arts organization to commit to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the Sydney Opera House has an important responsibility to lead by example,” said Sustainability Manager Emma Bombonato.
Kuala Lumpur joins the action with the Petronas Tower
In the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, the twin towers of the Petronas Towers – the symbol of the city – have announced their participation. In Singapore, all the Starbucks branches wanted to turn off the lights and serve free coffee for an hour. And Bangkok has fallen into darkness of the Grand Palace, as well as world-famous temples such as Wat Arun and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s national shrine.
According to WWF, Earth Hour is the world’s largest environmental campaign
According to WWF, Earth Hour is the largest global campaign to protect the climate and the environment. Millions of people around the world turn off their lights at 20:30 local time on a certain day in March in defense of the planet. Many buildings are also darkened. The starting pistol was launched in Sydney when some 2.2 million people extinguished the lights on March 31, 2007 – making history.
