Singer Paulo Diniz, MPB icon, dies aged 82 JC Online

The singer, songwriter and speaker from Pernambuco Paulo DinizHe, owner of many MPB hits in the 1970s, died this Wednesday (22) at the age of 82. The information was first released by broadcaster Geraldo Freire radio newspaper.

The artist died of natural causes at his home around 7 a.m. The wake and funeral will take place this Thursday (23rd) in Recife and should be reserved for family and friends. Paulo Diniz leaves behind a wife, a daughter, two stepdaughters, three grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Born in Pesqueira, Pernambuco, Paulo Diniz was a household name in MPB between the 1960s and 1980s and the author of hits like “canoeist”, “A Beer to Distract”, “Put a Rainbow in Your Pitcher” and “I want to go back to Bahia”. It became one of the biggest record sellers in the early 1970s.

Paulo Diniz spent the last years of his life in Boa Viagem, South Zone of Recife. He stopped doing shows, but continued to compose. He was recently hospitalized for hemodialysis. Due to paralysis of his lower limbs, a result of schistosomiasis, he needed a wheelchair to get around.
