Sister André, the oldest person in the world, dies at 118

French nun Lucile Randon, also known as Sister André and believed to be the oldest person alive, has died at the age of 118 in the southern French city of Toulon. The news was confirmed by the city’s mayor, Hubert Falco, who recalled that the woman would have celebrated her birthday in less than a month, on February 11.

“It is with great sadness and tremendous emotion that I have just learned of Sister André’s death,” said Falco in a post dedicated to the nun on her Facebook profile. “She was the doyenne of humanity and thanks to her remarkable age, she had won the hearts of all French people lovingly,” she said.

Born in southern France in 1904, the nun was included in the Guinness World Records list of oldest living people in April last year. With his death, 115-year-old María Branyas Morera, who lives in Spain, takes over the title of the oldest person in the world.
