Toulon – Sister André, the oldest woman in the world, has died.

She was born on February 11, 1904, was 118 years old and her baptismal name was Lucile Randon but everyone knew her as Sister André.

Sister André left during the night from Monday to Tuesday. She was hospitalized at a retirement home in Toulon, France. She inherited the title of “Doyenne of Humanity” in April 2022 after the death of Kane Tanaka, a 119-year-old Japanese woman.

Now confined to a wheelchair and blind, Sister André regretted losing some of her physical abilities. During the pandemic, she had contracted Covid-19, but despite everything, she managed to beat it.

“They say work kills, but work made me live. I worked until I was 108. I want to retire, but God doesn’t listen to me,” said the old woman when she was awarded the title of “Doyen of Humanity”.

“She died at 2 a.m. It is a great sadness but that was what he wanted, his wish was to reach his beloved brother. It was a liberation for them,” added David Tavella, communications manager at Sainte-Catherine-Labouré nursing home.
