With Joel Embiid and James Harden both getting the day off on Monday, the 66ers relief team collectively showed up and performed in a big way, beating the #1 Miami Heat by a final score of 113-106. The victory brings the Sixers back to a tie with Milwaukee and ranks second in the Eastern Conference, 2.5 games behind Miami and a polygame lead over Boston. Let’s move on to the ringer from today’s exciting win.

Tyreese Maxi: 28 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, 3 assists

We talk about this a lot, but why is Tyreese Maxi so good so soon? Tonight was a throwback to the start of the season, when no Joel wanted the keys to the attack to be handed over to 21-year-old Maxi, and he knows how to make that engine hum. Tyrese had a nice little effective game for himself (he finished 9 of 15 from the field and 7 of 7 from the foul line), but his last couple of minutes in this game were really special. Two minutes before the end, Maxi converted a three-point rally that hit the glass. He then performed a back step triple over Tyler Herro, followed shortly by a very long triple of 28-foot pull-ups. And to prove he’s a two-way player, he ended the night with an incredible block at Caleb Martin’s ring. Tens of thousands of people at the Wells Fargo Center chanted Tyrese Maxey’s name, and rightly so.

Shake Milton: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 assist

Good for Sheik. He had a tough year with an ankle injury, then COVID, and then a back problem. It was good to see him finally having a breakout game this season, tying season highs with 20 points and six assists. Today, Milton was brilliant at blasting his way into the teeth of the Miami defense, getting to his points to finish around the shaded area, or bringing in an extra defender and hitting an open teammate. He almost single-handedly kept Miami from an eight-point lead in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter. I often thought Shake was better off the ball, but today I saw a version of him that I could see as an effective substitute point guard.

Furkan Korkmaz: 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 0 assists

Having effectively dropped out of Doc Rivers’ rotation in the midst of a largely disappointing year, Korkmaz took the opportunity presented to him tonight and acquitted himself very well in favor of another chance. Furkan showed himself early, dunking on the baseline towards the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, he showed off the rest of his attacking repertoire by throwing with a fake pump and drive and then hitting a couple of open threes. In the evening, Korkmaz finished 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, nothing more than a shot that put the Sixers back in front with four minutes left in the game. I’m not saying this is definitely a turning point of the season for Furkan, but at least for one night it was amazing to get the rainmaker back.
