A white artist was criticized by internet users after she posted a video on TikTok in which she decorated her apartment with several African works of art. However, it was the bathroom that attracted attention, and many of them mentioned the topic of slavery.
In a post that has been viewed more than 735,000 times, TikTok user JPG (@jpgeez) reviews footage from artist Hannah Polskin’s now-deleted original video. The TikToker couldn’t help but frown at the sight of the toilet paper holder.

“So, I have a question,” he says in the introduction to his video. “Did someone ask you to decorate the bathroom like this?”
“What I ask myself, and I think everyone asks when they see this video, is what does the choice of toilet paper holder have to do with the rest of the decor?” – he afterwards.
Although Hannah Polskin is a white artist, the choice of decorations could be considered offensive to some, according to the Daily Dot article that shared the TikTok comments.
The decor is all the more offensive because the woman has decided to chain the toilet paper roll to the wall, a decorating idea that directly references the slavery era.
However, user JPG points out that decorating with African artwork or using chains as decoration is not in itself disruptive.
“You know, apart it’s not a problem, but together? It’s interesting,” he concludes ironically.
