Slovak Prime Minister claims to have “considered” sending Western soldiers to Ukraine

Populist Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, known for his anti-Ukrainian positions, claimed on Monday that some NATO and EU countries are considering sending soldiers to Ukraine, without giving further details.

“Several NATO and EU member states are considering sending their soldiers to the territory of Ukraine on a bilateral basis,” Robert Fico told the press after a government meeting. He was speaking before the start of a meeting of around twenty leaders, mostly from Europe, in Paris to reiterate their support for Ukraine.

“All they want is for the killing to continue.”

Robert Fico, elected in October 2023, has in the past questioned Ukraine's sovereignty and opposed sanctions against Russia.

“We see major security risks in the bilateral agreements that are expected to be concluded soon with NATO and EU member states that want to send their troops to Ukraine,” he said.

“I can't even imagine it. Soldiers from NATO member states will be stationed on the territory of Ukraine. I know what they're going to do there, but it's confidential information. That’s why I won’t broadcast it,” he said, adding that such a decision would lead to “a huge escalation of tensions.”

Robert Fico described the Paris meeting organized by French President Emmanuel Macron as a “fight meeting” and denounced the lack of a peace plan. “All they want is for the killing to continue,” he said.
