SMEs do not apply for tax credits due to time constraints

Although Quebec is offering tax breaks for SMEs due to labor shortages, several managers admit they don't have time to apply, according to a recent survey by the Canadian Federation of Business Independent (CFIB).

While half of SME owners take care of obtaining information and submitting applications themselves, only 30% have good knowledge of the subject.

The CFIB pointed out that the smaller the company, the more committed the entrepreneur behind it is, which leads to an increase in working hours – which are often already too many.

“We are in a vicious circle here: the more small businesses lack employees, the less time their manager has to deal with government aid because he is mobilized on site to put out fires,” said François Vincent, vice-president for Quebec at CFIB.

Several SME owners believe that Quebec needs to speed up and simplify the application process (61%), prioritize communication activities with them to inform them of the tax credits on offer (56%) and improve the company's communication methods. information (52%).

“It is time to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign among SMEs to receive government programs […] Additionally, regulatory relief and simplification will free up time for businesses,” Mr. Vincent added.

The survey was conducted from December 7 to 19, 2023 among 288 CFIB members who are also owners of SMEs in Quebec.
