A dastardly cockatoo was nicknamed “Peter Jackson” after he was caught stealing a pack of cigarettes from a tourist and then pulling out a cigarette and holding it in his beak like a common smoker.

The sulphur-crested cockatoo was spotted on the balcony of a Queensland resort by a tourist who filmed the encounter, curiously inspecting a packet of cigarettes.

Footage of the strange but hilarious incident was shared on social media back in April 2019, but the clip only resurfaced online this week. The cockatoo was nicknamed “Peter Jackson” after the brand of cigarettes by one commentator for his antics.

“This happened while staying at the Reef View Hotel on Hamilton Island – Queensland, Australia,” the tourist wrote in the clip’s caption at the time.

The cockatoo is sitting quietly on the balcony, holding the open packet of cigarettes with his foot.

Then he begins to pull out the cigarettes one by one with his beak.

The bird immediately drops the first smoke over the side of the resort and a second onto the balcony floor.

The cheeky animal manages to pull out a third cigarette and lets go of the entire pack, which falls over the side of the building.

It temporarily holds the third smoke in its beak like a smoker, twisting the pipe around its mouth.

The cockatoo then grabs the smoke with its foot and begins breaking it apart with its beak before dropping the remains.

The iconic Australian bird has a knack for snatching up food and possessions left unattended by humans.

Last June, a mischievous cockatoo pinched the caramel slice at a cafe diner before its eyes and flew off into the distance.

The cheeky bird appeared to give the man a false sense of security by eating crumbs off his table at a cafe in Lorne on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Then suddenly it grabbed the paper bag with the disk inside, and the food tried and failed to get the treat out of the animal’s mouth.

The bird then flew across the street with the bag attached to its mouth.

Footage posted to Instagram shows the laid-back bird named “Le Coqatou” enjoying a morning pastry in a Sydney beachfront suburb.

It balances on the “No Parking” sign while surveying the area between the beaks.

The dexterous bird even had polished table manners as it grabbed the food in its claw and lifted the buttery treat to its beak for small bites.
