Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem in the West Bank have been canceled due to the war between Israel and Hamas that has killed more than 20,000 people.

Instead of the celebrations, Palestinian Christians held a vigil where they sang and prayed for peace in the Gaza Strip with lit candles.

Bethlehem is considered the place where, according to Christianity, Jesus was born in a manger in the stable of a hotel because there were no more rooms for guests.

With this belief, it became a tradition for pilgrims to travel to the region. Christmas celebrations used to be joyful, with lights, trees and decorations.

There is hardly a trace of Roman culture in one of Christianity's most important festivals, which today is characterized by glowing trees, Santa Claus, nativity scenes and family gatherings.

Especially because for more than five centuries the Roman Empire was a people who believed in multiple deities.

But what is the connection between the Christmas we know and ancient Rome?

The answer to this question refers to a specific Roman festival: Saturnalia, the rite with which winter was welcomed in the Roman Empire on December 25th.
