A heartfelt tribute to victims of state terrorism in Argentina was held at the southern country’s embassy in Havana on the Memorial Day for Truth and Justice, and was a special tribute to journalist, intellectual and revolutionary Rodolfo Walsh, murdered by the dictatorship.
The act happened on the 45th anniversary of his posthumous document, a writer’s open letter to the military junta, a historic indictment of the horrors in his country after the March 24, 1976 coup d’état.
This was recalled by the Argentine Ambassador Luis Ilarregui, who was also imprisoned, tortured and disappeared by this regime. The diplomat highlighted the connections of Argentinian journalists such as Walsh and Jorge Ricardo Masetti in founding the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina, which he saw then and now as a bulwark against disinformation.

That’s what the diplomat meant Walsh’s letter is a testimony and an indictment of torture, enforced disappearances and flagrant human rights abuses at this tragic period in the Southern nation’s history.
He stressed that the Argentine dictatorship, in addition to killing at close range, had also produced the number of people who had disappeared and the kidnapping and extradition of the children of the dead mothers, who were never heard from again.

For his part, former diplomat and former deputy director of the Latin American Information Agency, Jesús Cruz, evoked the revolutionary Walsh, whose commitment prevented him from developing the literary body of work that could have made him one of the continent’s most important and prolific writers.
In his speech, he recalled Fidel Castro’s concern to save the life of Rodolfo Walsh, who preferred to return to the battle line in his home country rather than suggesting that he stay on the Caribbean island.

Photos in hand mention names that add to the long list of more than 30,000 people who have disappeared in their homeland, such as Esperanza Labrador’s husband and children, who were born in Cuba and dedicated their lives to the struggle for the truth.

Ramirez praised the opening of a reflection space at the embassy dedicated to promoting the historical memory of these tragic events “so that the horror may never return”.
The mothers and grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the efforts to find those who have disappeared and bring justice were the words of Graciela Ramírez, who also recalled former President Néstor Kirchner and his commitment to the victims.
A plaque commemorating Rodolfo Walsh was unveiled at the dedication of the Reflection Room.
