The Canada men’s soccer team will only play one friendly in the September and October international windows.
“Given our inability to confirm a high-quality opponent that met our competitive requirements in the September window, as well as financial constraints, we were unable to secure game dates for either window,” said Jason deVos, acting general secretary of Canada Soccer.
The Canadian team, which will take part in the 2023-2024 CONCACAF Nations League, will therefore only play one preseason game, and that will be on October 13 in Niigata against Japan, the 20th world power.
Canada qualified directly for the Nations League Quarterfinals, which will be held in November. A good result in this competition could qualify the national team for the 2024 Copa America.
Soccer Canada has been heavily criticized in recent months, especially financially. DeVos told TSN reporter Rick Westhead a month ago that the organization was on the verge of bankruptcy.
