March 30, 2023
In the 10th episode of The Social Show, the content creation podcast hosted by Francis Jette and produced in collaboration with Isarta, we discover the atypical journey of the tiktokeuse Geneuviève Thibault (@socialmimi) while you learn a thousand and one handy tips to shine on TikTok.
With videos garnering 2.7 million “likes”, Geneuviève Thibault has carved an enviable place for himself as a coach and supporter for companies looking to promote their brand on the Chinese platform. In an interview, however, we learn that the 48-year-old TikTokeuse has had a career full of detours and twists and turns: she was an engineer at SNC-Lavalin, founded an online shop for baby products and was an entrepreneur in Mexico.
[J’ai découvert TikTok] while attending the Social Media Marketing World conference in San Diego in March 2020. I listened to a presentation by a woman named Rachel Petersen who immediately got me hooked on TikTok. She was so passionate. I came back to Montreal and immediately installed the application. A few days later everything was closed due to the pandemic…”
At this point in history, the engineer-turned-entrepreneur had already developed strong community management skills and was hosting a forums site for her online store.
From the beginning [de mon parcours entrepreneurial]I had the idea that before you sell anything, you have to build a community.”
Three years later, the Sociale Mimi community has over 160,000 followers on TikTok.
The power of commenting and interacting with other users shouldn’t be underestimated, she reminds us. A community is not a one-way street. So if you’re on TikTok and not following or interacting with anyone, you’re sending yourself a signal that you’re not there for the right reasons. First you need to make a human connection; the commercial or transactional aspect remains secondary. »
No marketing plan or release schedule
Since her debut on TikTok, the content creator has encouraged an intuitive approach that allows spontaneity to flow.
The marketing folks would certainly smack me on the back, but I don’t have a concrete marketing plan or release schedule. I am a girl of feelings. My strength is taking chances. I am able to add a creative twist to an already existing trend. »
Throughout the interview, we understand that Geneuviève Thibault is a workaholic – she multiplies takes and edits at will. In addition, the quality of the many transition, dance, and tutorial videos is a testament to that. She is also very organized – she archives and categorizes her “sounds” by favorites in advance, in anticipation of an inspiring idea coming to her or a client’s mind.
Some people sometimes have white page syndrome, she notes. You can easily waste an hour or two trying to come up with an idea, while not wasting time recording sounds in advance and coming back to them when you have a flash. It’s super efficient. »
