The Spanish Socialists (PSOE) and the leftist Sumar alliance claim to have reached an agreement on a program for a joint government coalition. As both sides stated today, the agreement includes a reduction in legal working hours while maintaining wages. But a center-left coalition still needs additional support to win a majority in parliament from Catalan separatists.
In exchange for their support, the latter demand, among other things, an amnesty for Catalan independence activists who failed in their separatist cause in 2017. If there is no comprehensive agreement between all necessary partners, new elections will take place in January.
King Felipe VI of Spain had entrusted previous Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez with the formation of a government in early October. The socialist must try to obtain a majority for his election as head of government, after the previous failure of the conservative Alberto Nunez Feijó. The center-right camp narrowly lost its majority in the parliamentary elections on July 23.
