5 Facts About Soft Drinks You Didn’t Know

Currently it is possible to find soda in various locations such as: B. in restaurants, fast food, streets and even airplanes. However, in the early history of soda, pharmacies were the only place to buy it.
In the United States, the origin of soda can be traced back to the Victorian era of patent drug sales. In fact, early versions of soda were considered medicinal tonics.
Ingredients that are now illegal
The first soft drinks had ingredients that were considered odd and even illegal for the purpose, such as tobacco and cocaine.

Made from building materials
In the early days of carbonated beverages, production was quite rudimentary. Carbonation was a demanding process, but the industrial age spurred the search for technical solutions.
Carbonation consists in dissolving carbon dioxide in a liquid to make it gaseous.
English chemist and businessman John Matthews used powdered calcium carbonate in his home to create carbon dioxide. However, when he moved to the United States in 1832, he discovered that marble was a more readily available material and used it instead.
Special soda flavor for those who didn’t care
One of the fascinating characteristics of soft drinks throughout the ages is the wide variety of flavors created to please every palate. There used to be a special flavor called Don’t Care, created for customers who couldn’t decide on a flavor or were looking for a stronger drink than sugary soft drinks.
These drinks used to be low in alcohol. A recipe published in The Standard Manual of Soda and Other Beverages in 1897 used a combination of fruit syrup, vanilla extract, and port wine. Another “Don’t Care” syrup recipe included whiskey, simple syrup, and nutmeg essence.

Fanta was born out of necessity of war
The drink, named after the German word ‘fantasy’, was actually born out of wartime necessity in Nazi Germany. During World War II, CocaCola’s German subsidiary faced a problem: how to sustain production of its popular soft drink in the face of wartime restrictions that prevented importing the necessary ingredients.
So Max Keith, head of CocaCola’s German operations, ordered his team to create a new soft drink using only available industry byproducts such as whey, fruit shavings and apple fiber. The result was Fanta, a bubbly orangeflavored lemonade that was an instant hit.
