Solar patio umbrellas sold at Costco recalled after multiple fires

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a press release urging customers to “immediately discontinue” SunVilla’s 10-foot solar LED market umbrella.

The umbrellas were made by California-based SunVilla Corp. manufactured, according to the press release. They feature LED lights on the inner arms and a solar panel with a black cover at the top of the shade.

“The lithium-ion batteries in the umbrella’s solar panels can overheat and pose fire and burn hazards,” the CPSC said.

The umbrellas sold in Costco stores and online for between $130 and $160 from December 2020 through May 2022, the CPSC said.

In the United States, there were “three reports of fires from indoor AC adapter charging and two reports of umbrellas catching fire when the solar panel puck overheated and catching fire while attached to the umbrella, and one smoke inhalation injury.” “. CPSC said.

SunVilla has received a report of battery overheating and an umbrella fire in Canada, according to a news release issued by Health Canada on Thursday, with no injuries reported.

About 400,000 of the umbrellas were sold in the United States and about 33,000 in Canada, according to the CPSC. The umbrellas were recalled jointly by the CPSC, Health Canada, SunVilla and Costco.

Customers should stop using the umbrellas and remove the solar panel puck (the part that contains the lithium-ion battery), protect it from the sun and flammable materials, and not charge the puck with its power adapter, the CPSC says. Umbrellas can be returned to any Costco warehouse for a full refund.
