In the United States, the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 per hour for several years. With this in mind, most states in the country have their own laws setting base payments. This year, more than twenty states have increased the minimum hourly wage for their workers. Therefore, several salary increases are also planned for 2024.
To be precise, 30 American states have implemented wages above the federal minimum wage. These include California, Florida, New York and the District of Columbia.
Some of them already have laws that provide for automatic salary increases at the beginning of each year. On the other hand, some link the increases to the cost of living and the development of the inflation rate.
Which states will increase the minimum wage by 2024?
It should be clarified that in most cases the increases will take effect from January 1, 2024. However, in some areas it will come into force in the middle of the year, in the month of July, and in others it will come into force in September. .
Therefore the states are: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey and New York.
The states of New Mexico, Rhode Island, Ohio, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia complete the list.
People should know that increases will vary. An example of this is California, where the new minimum wage will be $16.00 per hour starting in 2024.
In Connecticut, however, an amount has not yet been set as it is adjusted based on the cost of living.
In Delaware, the minimum hourly wage is $13.25 per hour as of 2024, and in Florida it is $13.00 per hour.
In Hawaii and Illinois, the minimum wage is $14.00 as of January 1, 2024. In Maryland and Maine it is $15.00 and in Massachusetts it is $16.25.
