Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won the box office and had the best opening weekend of any video game film

Not only did Sonic the Hedgehog 2 win the domestic weekend box office with box office sales of $71 million, it also had the best opening weekend of any video game film of all time.

As Variety reports, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 surpassed the $58 million record set by 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog. The original opened over President’s Day weekend, and the sequel even surpassed the four-day total of $70 million that the first film had.

Internationally, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $37 million to bring its global total to $141 million. Sonic 2 cost $90 million to produce and its performance to date should be encouraging for the studio.

In our Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review, we said that it “brings all of the humor and charm of its predecessor while being delightfully more faithful to its source material.”

Morbius ranked second with a profit of $10.2 million, but has seen a drastic 74% drop since its opening weekend. After two weeks, Morbius has grossed $57 million in North America and $69.2 million internationally.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s The Lost City took third place by taking $9.1 million while holding back newcomer Ambulance and its $8.7 million in ticket sales. Ambulance, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzalez, cost $40 million to produce. The Lost City has earned $68.8 million domestically, which is a good sign since it cost $68 million to produce.

Rounding out the top 5 was The Batman, which grossed $6.5 million before arriving on HBO Max on April 19. The Batman has grossed US$358 million domestically and US$376 million internationally, bringing its worldwide tally to US$735 million.
