Sony cancels ‘Karate Kid’ movie for Summer 2024, pushes back ‘Kraven’ and ‘Madame Web’

The Karate Kid franchise is getting new life in theaters. Sony’s Columbia Pictures has set a date for a Karate Kid movie to premiere on June 7, 2024. No filmmakers or other details have been revealed, but it’s been described as “the return to the original Karate Kid franchise.”

The series started in 1984 and spawned three sequels and a 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith. The franchise found new relevance thanks to Cobra Kai, the TV series currently streaming on Netflix, which also stars original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka alongside younger actors. It is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

The studio also set a date for an untitled true haunting film, rumored to be inspired by real events and directed by Gary Fleder. The Screen Gems horror film about a couple who moves into a haunted house will be released on January 6, 2023. Missing, the Screen Gems sequel to the Searching franchise, will be released on February 24, 2023. It stars Storm Reid and Nia Long.

Sony has also tackled a number of high-profile features. It delayed Adam Driver’s sci-fi film 65 by a month to March 10, 2023. (The Columbia film was previously April 28, 2023 and is by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods).

It also delayed Columbia’s Kraven the Hunter, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson film that focuses on the Spider-Man antagonist. Kraven will now bow on October 6, 2023, down from January 13, 2023. Fellow Columbia/Marvel title Madame Web has also been moved from October 6, 2023 to February 16, 2024 (the date now occupied by Kraven ). ). Dakota Johnson plays the title character.

Garfield, the voice with Chris Pratt, switched back three months to a Memorial Day weekend opening on May 24, 2024. It was previously scheduled for February 16, 2024.
