You probably also know that two of the show’s biggest stars, Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush, married in 2005 after two years of dating — and split five months later.

A breakup is obviously hard to pull off – but Chad and Sophia worked on the show for years until the former left the show in 2009. Sometime after their split, their characters (Lucas Scott and Brooke Davis, respectively) were evenly dated on the show.

In a recent episode of Sophia’s drama Queens podcast with former One Tree Hill co-stars Bethany Joy Lenz and Hilarie Burton, the actress made some rare comments about what it was like to continue working with her ex.

The conversation started when Bethany mentioned that Sophia was “going through a breakup with the person you were romanced with.”

“Regardless of all these circumstances, it’s incredibly difficult — to be emotional, to be vulnerable and to be there in that moment,” she told Sophia.

Bethany also said she thought it was “really beautiful” that despite the circumstances, Sophia could be “so raw and open and vulnerable” in her acting – to which Sophia replied, “People can call it whatever they want.”

“You can say it’s strength, you can say it’s pride, you can say it’s professionalism — you can influence it positively or negatively,” she continued.

“But I always wanted to put Brooke Davis ahead of everyone and everything else. Nothing was important to me other than being honest with her.”

It’s quite surprising that Sophia chose to talk about the experience at all. As recently as last year, the actress said she would no longer be answering questions about Chad.

During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Sophia said she was “not allowed” to talk about her marriage to Chad because “I was trying to make fun of being a stupid kid , and whenever I’ve done that, it gets twisted into making me talk shit about someone I don’t even know anymore, who’s clearly an adult.”
