Italian actress Sophia Loren, 89, was recovering Monday from hip surgery she suffered in a fall the day before at her home in Geneva.

“After successful surgery, she will have to undergo a short recovery period and then rehabilitation measures,” said a press release on Facebook from the restaurant chain that she owns and which bears her name. “Fortunately everything went well and the Signora will be with us again soon.”
The legend of the golden age of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren, who celebrated her 89th birthday on September 20, starred in around 90 films and was crowned with two Oscars and an acting award at Cannes.
During a beauty pageant in Rome in September 1951, the young actress met producer Carlo Ponti, 22 years her senior, who would become the man of her life and her cinema pygmalion.
Then her career took off and she made films with international ambitions, such as “Bread, Love, So Be It” by Dino Risi or “The Girl on the River” by Mario Schlachti in 1955.
From 1957, the voluptuous brunette with almond-shaped eyes starred in Hollywood alongside the greatest actors of the time, from Anthony Quinn to Clark Gable, including Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Peter Sellers, John Wayne and Frank Sinatra. ..

His last film appearance was in 2020 in “La vie avant soi”, an adaptation of the novel by Romain Gary directed by his son Edoardo Ponti. Thanks to this role, she won the Best Actress Award at the César of Italian Cinema in 2021.
