Sophia Loren had to undergo emergency surgery on Sunday after suffering multiple fractures, including one to her femur, following a serious fall at her Swiss home.
The Italian acting icon, who turned 89 on September 20, fell in her bathroom and suffered multiple fractures to her hip and a severe fracture to her femur that required surgery, a source close to the actress told . The source added that there is cautious optimism about the outcome of the surgery and Loren’s recovery, which will include a short recovery and then a long rehabilitation.
News of Loren’s fall spread through a restaurant she planned to open on September 26 in the Italian city of Bari – the fourth such restaurant to bear her name. The actress was actually supposed to receive honorary citizenship of the city, but now all of her engagements have been canceled for the foreseeable future.
According to sources, the actress’ sons Carlo and Edoardo are by her side in the hospital. Edoardo directed Loren in her most recent feature, the 2020 Netflix feature “The Life Ahead,” which earned her a David di Donatello Award for Best Actress. Loren’s last public appearance was on September 2nd at the Armani fashion show in Venice, held during the 80th Venice Film Festival.
