“It was an indescribable feeling to arrive at this point in our journey. Every time I met her, I always remained humble in those encounters. Always a sweetness, a simplicity, a great affection for me. “It’s unforgettable, it left a deep impression on me,” said the actress.

The film shows the beginning of the career of the “Mother of All Voices”, starting with the choice of her stage name: Gal Costa.

In the film, it is Gilberto Gil, played by Dan Ferreira, who suggests that the singer adopt the nickname that her friends have already used. Caetano Veloso, played by Rodrigo Lélis, doesn’t really like the idea.

From the invitation to play Gal in the cinema to her appearance on the screen, five years passed. During this time, Sophie Charlotte immersed herself in Bahian culture. He read interviews and listened to all the records.

When Dandara Ferreira, one of the film’s directors, chose Sophie as the protagonist, she didn’t know that the actress also sang. And it was Gal herself who told it.

“I called Gal and said, ‘Gal, I was thinking about Sophie Charlotte. What do you think?’ She loved. And then she said, “A lot of singers try to sing my way, but Sophie has the same timbre as me.” But I said, “Where did you see it?” How do you know?’ She said: “I saw her singing Sua Estupidez, with Roberto Carlos,” the director recalled.

“Being able to sing in the film, discovering her, learning from her, which at the time of the film meant an approach by seeking a vocal approach, but also learning about breathing and the musical choices she made. “The crystal voice, the absolute voice. “I love singing, so it was a school,” Sophie revealed.

The film shows Gal’s arrival in Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s, still shy, as she is greeted by her group which, in addition to Gil and Caetano, also included Maria Bethânia, played by Dandara herself.

At this time, Gal and his friends changed the course of Brazilian music with the creation of the movement that became known as Tropicália.
