Sophie Ellis-Bextor faces chart competition from other 2000s pop icons as her world-famous song enjoys a major boost thanks to Sydney Sweeney's romantic comedy Anevere But You

Sophie Ellis-Bextor was catapulted to stardom 23 years ago with her hit “Murder On The Dancefloor”.

And the singer has enjoyed a career boost in recent weeks after the 2001 song enjoyed a resurgence after it featured in the Bafta-nominated film Saltburn.

But Sophie, 44, may have competition: Natasha Bedingfield, also a 2000s pop sensation, is vying for the number one spot again.

Natasha's song “Unwritten”, released in 2004 and enjoying chart success on both sides of the Atlantic, has once again caught the attention of music fans.

The track has returned to the top 20 of the Official UK Singles Chart after being featured on the Sydney Sweeney romantic comedy Anyone But You.

Natasha's song is trending on TikTok as people use it in their videos, bringing it back into the mainstream consciousness and giving the star her first UK hit since her 2007 song “Love Like This”, which she co-wrote Sean Kingston reached number 20.

Talking about her music's comeback on social media, the musician said: “I've had songs in films before, but this time I really love the way they've been used in such a special way that it brings you joy.”

She added, “People actually sing it when they leave the theater!” Over the years, “Unwritten” has somehow become a sing-along anthem. That makes me the happiest girl in the world.'

Reality TV fans will also be familiar with Natasha's song “Unwritten” when it was used as the theme song for the MTV show “The Hills” from 2006 to 2010.

Following her recent chart success, it was announced last week that Sophie Ellis-Bextor had secured a major deal with her old record label.

Her song “Murder On The Dancefloor” features in the finale of Emerald Fennell's much-discussed film, in which the main character Oliver – played by Barry Keoghan – dances naked to the song.

The film's popularity – and the dance scene trending on social media – led to “Murder On The Dancefloor” being among the top five most played titles in the world the week before last.

The hit also gave the singer her first taste of success in the lucrative American market – something friends of the star say left her “amazed”.

A music industry source told the Mail on Sunday: “Sophie has become a global star again.”

“Universal, her old record label, snapped her up and she will be releasing new music later in the year.”

“She’ll probably be a bigger star than she was back then.”

“It came out of nowhere for Sophie and she’s thrilled and really excited.”

Sophie said: “It's just an extraordinary thing and I'm finding it quite difficult to come to terms with.”

“It feels a little more real now, but I’m doing my best to just enjoy it.”

After hearing 'Murder On The Dancefloor' live, 38-year-old Saltburn director Emerald Fennel was convinced it was the right song for her hit film – not least because the lyrics fit the film's script.

During the pandemic, Sophie – daughter of former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis – became a sensation after dancing in her kitchen and posting clips on social media.

This led to her releasing an album called Songs From The Kitchen Disco and also landed her a deal with the BBC, who broadcast a playlist of hers every week on their Sounds app.
