Sophie Ellis-Bextor's hit 'Murder On The Dancefloor' hits the top 40 again after 22 years thanks to THAT full-frontal Saltburn scene

Sophie Ellis-Bextor's hit single 'Murder On The Dancefloor' is set to re-enter the Big Top 40 on Sunday, 22 years after its original release – and it's all thanks to comedy thriller Saltburn.

The Golden Globe-nominated film stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant and is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell.

It's about an apparently working-class Oxford University student from Merseyside, played by Barry, 31, who falls in love with upper-class student Felix, played by Jacob, 26.

In the final scene of the film, Barry's character dances around a mansion completely naked while the 2001 hit “Murder On The Dancefloor” plays in the background.

Fans' obsession with the film and subsequently its soundtrack has seen 44-year-old Sophie and her platinum-selling song rocket up the charts.

Murder On The Dancefloor is now predicted to be in the 20s when the new Big Top 40 chart is released on Sunday.

The track has also climbed the Spotify charts and is poised to break into the top 10 as Generation Z has discovered the singer.

The song made it into the top 20 of the UK Spotify charts on Friday and had climbed to number 12 earlier in the week – and now fans are vying for Sophie to take the top spot they think she originally deserved.

The singer was beaten to the top spot by Daniel Bedingfield's Gotta Get Thru This when the track was originally released in 2001.

The song was the second single from Sophie's debut album Read My Lips, following Cher's cover “Take Me Home”, with both songs reaching number two.

In the video for the song, Sophie takes part in a dance competition and murders or mutilates her fellow competitors so that she can win.

Fans have taken to X, formerly Twitter, demanding that the song finally reach the top of the charts.

One said: “Should have been number 1 the first time around but it has a long lifespan. 'It never gets old!'

She looked incredible in a colorful sequin dress as she weaved and kicked her way down the stairs to the beat of the song in a TikTok video.

Sophie spoke to Pink News in November about the use of her song in the film, saying: “I really loved the film.”

“It's funny because whenever you're asked if a song should be involved in something, you're always given a brief synopsis or a general idea of the placement.” I just thought it was brilliant. It's so beautifully shot.

The script is peppy and funny, sharp and witty, and then someone dances full-frontal naked to my song. I can't wait for more people to see it. It's quite an unexpected moment.'

Saltburn was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards: Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for Barry and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture Drama for Rosamund.

Rosamund, 44, plays Felix's mother. This nomination is her fourth and if she wins it would be her second Golden Globe, while Richard, 66, portrays Felix's father.

Barry, who is from Ireland, first gained widespread attention in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals (2021).

For his role in the tragicomedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2023) he was nominated for a Golden Globe and won a BAFTA.

Jacob was best known for his role in the raunchy drama Euphoria before winning critical acclaim for his role as Elvis Presley in the biopic Priscilla (2023).
