A wide-ranging manhunt was launched in South Africa on Saturday for at least four gunmen suspected of killing six people. It was about the loss of an identity card of one of the alleged murderers, the police said.
Police suspect that at least four men broke into a house in a township near Durban (east) on Friday evening and killed four people there. Two other people were found a few meters away in a hut, and a third was injured.
According to initial findings from the investigation, the suspected leader of the murderous raid asked the victims for their ID before shooting them, police spokesman Robert Netshiunda said.
“He is believed to be responsible for another murder and is wanted by police where he accidentally dropped his ID,” he added.
According to press reports, this man believed that one of the victims was in possession of the document.
Mass shootings are relatively common in South Africa, a country with one of the highest homicide rates in the world.
The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party said the latest shooting highlighted the criminals’ “complete disregard” for law enforcement agencies in the country.
