South African Vice President Endorses Promoting Positive Masculinity

During the official launch of the Takuwani Ri-ime Action Program in Ha-Masia in the northern province of Limpopo, the Vice President said gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa had reached a tipping point.

“This is a crucial step in our ongoing commitment to promoting positive masculinity in our society,” he added at the initiative’s launch event the previous day.

Takuwani Ri-ime is a call for men to stand together to respond to the diverse gender challenges in our society, Mashatile explained.

This national call, he continued, is consistent with global initiatives to end violence against women and girls, principles defended by the African Union and the United Nations.

In this context, South African traditional leaders also expressed their belief that gender-based violence can be prevented in the country.

Men should not be proud of what is currently happening in South Africa, considered the world’s capital of violence, they stressed.

On the issue, Mashatile revealed that President Cyril Ramaphosa had proposed a bill to curb the scourge of violence against women and children.
