It was a sunny day in Cape Town, South Africa, with almost no clouds in the sky, and golf seemed like an interesting outdoor activity to Elitha Peachey. She is the owner of the Instagram profile that filmed and shared the invasion of a Nivea Cobra at the Atlantic Beach Golf Club last Saturday (18). In the video, the animal crawls and attacks a fixed sports target on the grass.

The video posted online went viral, gathering comments trying to understand what caused the animal’s “visit.” One of the Instagram users relies on the hypothesis that the snake is running away from a mongoose, which was also seen in the video. Mongooses are related to meerkats, are about 70 cm long and are excellent snake hunters.
South Africa’s most dangerous snake terrorizes athletes on the golf course
The Naja Nivea is considered one of the most dangerous snakes on the African continent and is highly venomous. According to the African Snakebite Institute, they and the black mamba are responsible for most fatal snakebites in South Africa. Their venom is neurotoxic, causes progressive weakness and can quickly impair breathing.

The Nivea cobra is found primarily in the Cape Provinces, but can also be spotted in northwest and southern Botswana and Namibia.
According to the African Snakebite Institute, color can vary between black, shades of brown, yellow and spots. Puppies may have a dark stripe on their neck. The species can be confused with the mole snake and the black spittle snake.
