A twoyearold girl, abandoned by her parents, has been living in the University Hospital of Salamanca in Spain since she was 11 months old because she suffers from an incurable illness that requires medical care 24 hours a day.

The child, who is being cared for by the Junta de Castilla y León, has been in intensive care for more than a year, reports La Razón. Since then, she has been treated by medical professionals as “part of her own family,” as the hospital’s head of pediatrics told the same newspaper.

“The relationship they have built with her is special and full of affection,” Eduardo Consuegra also revealed.

Despite limited mobility and greater susceptibility to respiratory diseases, health experts have tried to give him special moments. They made her a mermaid tail for her birthday and took her kids to the pool with her whenever they could. Over time, they also took photos and documented her life in the hospital so that in the future the girl would know how those two years went.

The hospital’s doctors and nurses’ greatest wish is for the child to find a family that will welcome him, and social services are already working toward this goal. According to Eduardo Consuegra, several families have already shown interest in adopting, but this process will take longer than normal because the girl’s illness is “lifelong and requires constant care.”
