Spain is tense due to the takeover of Pamplona by the party that inherits ETA's political branch Southwest

Abuses are never condemned

This seemingly local fight for control of Pamplona, a city known around the world for its famous San Fermín festivals, actually has a national scope, a month after the return of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to power thanks to the support of two Catalan independence parties, but also that of EH Bildu.

Critics of EH Bildu criticize that party for not clearly condemning the decades-long abuses of ETA, an armed group blamed for the deaths of more than 850 people across the country. EH Bildu has former ETA members in its ranks.

After local and regional elections last May, the Navarre branch of the Socialist Party promised not to help EH Bildu win the mayoralty of Pamplona and allowed the election as mayor of Ms. Ibarrola, whose party had not received any further elected officials. But a few weeks ago, the Socialists made a U-turn, much to the dismay of the right-wing opposition.

“Veiled Pact”

“This motion of censure is the covert pact of (Arnaldo) Otegi (head of HE Bildu) and Sánchez,” denounced Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party, the largest right-wing opposition party, on Thursday morning, in a reference to the balaclavas worn by members of the ETA -Commands are carried.
