Pedro Sánchez’s Spanish Socialist Party has reached an agreement with the creation of Catalan separatist Carles Puigdemont with a view to reappointing the outgoing prime minister.

Pedro Sánchez’s Spanish Socialist Party reached an agreement with the formation of Catalan separatist Carles Puigdemont on Thursday, November 9, after intensive negotiations, with a view to reappointing the outgoing prime minister, a source close to the negotiations told AFP.

In return for their support, the Catalan separatists received a commitment from the Socialists that Parliament would pass an amnesty law for their leaders and activists who were indicted in court, notably for involvement in the attempted secession of Catalonia in 2017.

Anger from the Spanish right and the far right

The source close to the negotiations did not provide any information on the content of the agreement, which, according to Spanish media, was to be presented at midday in Brussels, where Carles Puigdemont has been stationed since his departure from Spain in 2017 to avoid prosecution by the Spanish judiciary.

The support of the seven deputies from Carles Puigdemont’s “Together for Catalonia” (Junts per Catalunya) party is crucial for Pedro Sánchez, who came second in the July 23 general elections, so that he can have a majority in parliament that will give him this enabled him to return to power. The amnesty law for Catalan separatists has angered the Spanish right and the far right, who accuse Pedro Sánchez of being willing to do anything to stay in power.
