Spirit Airlines apologizes for sending child to wrong airport before Christmas – Washington Examiner

Spirit Airlines apologized after accidentally sending a six-year-old traveler to an airport four hours away from the child's intended destination.

The child, who was traveling from Philadelphia, was scheduled to arrive at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers on Thursday but somehow made it to Orlando. The airline assured that the boy was under constant supervision by an airline team member and had taken immediate action to resolve the mishap.

“We take the safety and responsibility of transporting all of our guests seriously and are conducting an internal investigation,” the airline said in a statement. “We apologize to the family for this experience.”

The airport also offered the boy's grandmother, Maria Ramos, compensation to travel between Fort Myers and Orlando to pick up her grandson. However, Ramos said she would like the airline to explain how the situation arose, which she described as one of the scariest experiences she has ever had.

“How did this happen?” Ramos asked. “Did they get him off the plane? The flight attendant – after mom handed him the paperwork – she let him go alone? He jumped on the wrong plane alone?

The Washington Examiner contacted Spirit Airlines and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for comment.
