The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards kicked off Sunday on Santa Monica Beach, celebrating the year's best in indie film and television as film awards season reaches its peak.

This year, Aidy Bryant will host and preside over a ceremony that will crown the grand winner for best feature film, which will emerge from five nominees: A24's “Past Lives,” Netflix's “May December,” Amazon's “American Fiction.” MGM Studios, Searchlight's “All of Us Strangers” and Sony Pictures Classics' “We Grown Now” and “Mubi's Passages.”
Cord Jefferson already has a win for American Fiction, taking home the award for best screenplay, while Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik won best first screenplay in May/December.
Also today, Oscar nominees Da'Vine Joy Randolph of The Holdovers won a Spirit for the gender-neutral Best Supporting Actor category, “Anatomy of a Fall” for Best International Film and “Four Daughters” for Best Documentary.
The Last of Us has won twice on the TV side of things so far, for performances by Nick Offerman and Keivonn Montreal Woodard.
Recall that last year another A24 film, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” stormed the beach, scooping up seven Spirit awards, including Best Picture, on its way to the Best Picture Oscar crown.
This year, it's “Past Lives,” “May, December” and “American Fiction” that are at the top with five nominations each, with Celine Song's romantic drama and Cord Jefferson's biting satire at the 2024 Oscars, March 10 take place, end up in the corresponding category.

Today's Spirit TV races feature Beef, Dreaming While Black, I'm a Virgo, Jury Duty and Slip in the Best New Scripted Series category (won last year by The Bear). The Netflix series “Beef” has been dominant at the awards ceremonies to date, winning acting awards for its stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun at the SAG Awards on Saturday evening.
Wong won today in the category for best lead role in a new scripted series.
Competing in the film's lead race are Jessica Chastain, Greta Lee, Trace Lysette, Natalie Portman, Judy Reyes, Franz Rogowski, Andrew Scott, Teyana Taylor, Jeffrey Wright and Teo Yoo.
