spliffing! 4/20 takes over US as cannabis smokers flock to parks across country

  • Thousands of marijuana smokers poured into the parks Thursday for the 4/20 day
  • Crowds in New York City wore costumes to enjoy being “lit” with others
  • In San Francisco and Denver, residents set themselves on fire and hung out with other smokers

US citizens flocked to the parks on Thursday to celebrate April 20, a holiday that’s all about celebrating marijuana.

From coast to coast, people smoked both in their own homes and in parks in big cities with other weed lovers around.

In New York City, hundreds gathered in Washington Square Park for an interesting and somewhat unconventional “flit” through the haze.

Meanwhile, across the country, music icon Erykah Badu served as San Francisco’s marijuana grand marshal, urging thousands of smokers to “Put your weed in the air” at exactly 4:20 p.m.

The holiday dates back to 1971, and theories about how it started range from acknowledging Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women” to the police code.

During Thursday’s celebrations in New York, marijuana lovers turned out in costumes and adorned with weed of various shapes.

One video shows a man in a Super Mario Bros. outfit igniting a contraption, which then puffs marijuana smoke at a huge crowd packed with people recording.

Another video from Washington Square Park shows a man smoking a blunt that appears to be at least a foot long.

“Yo, what the heck is New York, bro,” the person recording is heard saying

The “Walking Blunt” hardly turned the heads of passers-by.

San Franciscos across the country nodded to Badu’s music as she sang.

“For a lot of us, this is our medicine,” she told the audience, as reported by SF Gate.

“This shit is here to take you to a higher place,” the “On & On” singer said.

The 420 Hippie Hill event took place in the famous Golden Gate Park and included music, food trucks, vendors and – of course – marijuana.

In the south, Denver city officials prepared for the arrival of about 40,000 people at Civic Center Park for the annual Mile High 420 Festival.

The event was open only to smokers 21 and older and, like the San Francisco affair, included food and music.

The festival brought out big names like Rick Ross, Fivio Foreign, Waka Flocka Flame and more.

The host was none other than Tommy Chong, made famous by his role in the comedy duo Cheech & Chong.

Marijuana was not on the agenda of the event as consumption in public places is illegal.

“Anyone caught distributing marijuana or using illegal substances at the event may be removed from the event by local authorities,” festival organizers warned.

As of 2023, marijuana is currently legal in almost half of all US states.

Results from two polls suggest support for legal cannabis in the US now outstrips support for cigarettes. The data is shown above. The above shows cannabis use across American states. Twenty-one states and DC have legalized it for recreational use in addition to medicinal use, while nearly all now allow medicinal use.
