Sprong’s paid alarm clock

Daniel Sprong faced an interesting challenge ahead of the Seattle Kraken’s final training camp. Despite his many years of NHL experience, the forward accepted a pro trial contract. A very profitable bet so far.

The Dutch-born Quebec forward is one of the big bargains in the NHL. Before Monday’s game against the Canadiens, he had 24 points, including 12 goals in 31 games. His best career season at Bettman circuit.

From that crop, he scored eight points on the power play, in addition to scoring two game-winning goals. Not to mention that he has a +16 difference, one of the best among the Kraken. All this for minimum wage ($750,000).

“After a good season, you think you’ll get a good contract after this one,” said Daniel Sprong after his team’s morning practice session. You expect to sign, but sometimes nothing happens and things don’t turn out the way you expected. You may also find that your game is not on point.

“I decided to come back with the Kraken on a pro trial because the coaches knew me well. I used the situation as a wake-up call. »

Sprong, who has also sported the colors of the Penguins, Ducks and Capitals during his career, doesn’t boast. He knows very well that pitfalls may lurk on his path.

“I’m concentrating on one game at a time,” he said. It can quickly switch sides. I just want to keep doing the right things. »

Deficiencies must be corrected

Seeing his contract negotiations weren’t working out, Sprong decided to focus his energies on his fitness and defensive play.

“That was a motivational boost for me. I knew I could play in this league,” said the 6-foot, 202-pound athlete.

“We talked to several teams in the summer, but my defensive play was always the focus of the talks.

“I corrected the gaps in my game and knew it would help my offensive side. I’ve done a lot of video sessions with my coaches since the start of the season.

“Then when I play against teams that didn’t want me to sign a contract, I manage to make them pay for it in my own way. »

A worker

Sprong’s performance is somewhat surprising, as is Kraken’s. According to his coach, the recipe for Seattle number 91 was simple.

“I love how hard he’s working to improve his game both ways,” said Dave Hakstol. That makes it indispensable for us. We can trust him.

“He was asked to work on certain facets of his game while also building on his strengths. He can score in all situations. He is intense and physically strong. »

At the current pace, Sprong could end the season with around 50 points. A feat that could give his agent interesting cards in anticipation of the next free agent market.

The main prospect doesn’t want to talk about the rest. He lives in the present moment. He just wants to keep increasing his market value.
