Square Enix Launches Special Interview Series Celebrating Final Fantasy’s 35th Anniversary

As part of the celebrations surrounding the 35th anniversary of the famous Final Fantasy series, Square Enix has released a series of special interviews. This two-part series is both a celebration of this milestone and a tribute to the recent Pixel Remaster series. The first part of the interview aired on July 11, 2023 and featured prominent figures from the franchise, including creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, artist Kazuko Shibuya, and brand executive Yoshinori Kitase.

The interview started with Sakaguchi refers to a meeting with the developers and the people he plays FFXIV with that Shibuya also attended. He humorously mentioned how they blamed the team for the lack of save points in FFIII’s final dungeon. Sakaguchi explained how he eventually apologized for the development decision, thereby showing his commitment to the players.

About eight minutes into the interview, I learned the meaning of the name final fantasy was addressed. Sakaguchi explained how the Fighting Fantasy title influenced her choice. He also mentioned that the team wanted a game name that could be abbreviated using the Roman alphabet, similar to what happened with Dragon Quest and its acronym DQ. This is how the name FF came about. The band also took this opportunity to discuss and debunk the urban legends surrounding the title.
