Stanford mourns death of women’s soccer goalkeeper Katie Mayer

STANDFORD (CBS SF) – A Stanford University student found dead on campus has been identified as Katie Meyer, the star goalkeeper of the 2019 Cardinal Women’s National Football Team.

Although they did not reveal any details about Mayer’s death, university officials said the campus was in a state of mourning and that grief counselors were available.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Katie Meyer, a senior major in International Relations and History, a permanent assistant and team captain and goalkeeper for the Stanford women’s soccer team, has died,” university officials said in a news release. “Please join us in expressing our deepest condolences to her parents and sisters. We would also like to express our heartfelt condolences to Katie’s friends, classmates, classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches. “

“Katie was extremely committed to everything and everyone in her world,” the statement continued. “Her friends describe her as a team player who is bigger than life in all her pursuits.

The 22-year-old grew up in Burbank and excelled in football at an early age. She was a member of the national under-16 girls’ team, which played in Italy and the Netherlands.

At Stanford, as a freshman with a red shirt, she made 16 starts in 2019 with 0.26 goals against the average and 0.818 percent of the save. But she will always be remembered for her performance in the shootout of the 2019 NCAA Championship.

“Fiercely competitive, Katie made two critical saves on penalties against North Carolina to help Stanford win its third NCAA Women’s Football Championship in 2019,” university officials said. “Katie was a bright light for so many on the field and in our community.”

The news of Mayer’s death caused an outpouring of emotions on social media.

“Aaaaa. I send it to Katie’s family and friends. Heartbreaking. Embrace someone close to you. Tell them how much you love them, “said former Stanford star and great national team player Julie Foody.

In a statement Tuesday to Stanford students, faculty and staff, Vice Vice President of Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole said a student had died at a campus residence. It appears to have occurred at Crothers Hall, where police and an ambulance were spotted around 11 a.m.

The Stanford Daily reported that a police officer had identified the death as emergency medical care. Brubaker-Cole quoted police as saying there was no constant threat to the safety of those on campus. The school did not identify the student at the time, nor the cause of death, in order to respect the family’s privacy.
