Starfleet Academy is the next Star Trek show coming to Paramount Plus

A few months ago we received word that Star Trek: Discovery was canceled and that Season 5 would be the last on Paramount Plus. I was worried. The official Star Trek convention has been canceled at what feels like the last minute, the streaming wars are dying down, and media companies seem less and less interested in investing big bucks in new shows.

I spent that day wondering if this was just the first in a series of bad news about the new Star Trek.

As is usual, details are sparse, but here’s what we know from the press release:

The series follows the adventures of a new class of cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.

The only other details offered come from an in-universe statement that states, “For the first time in over a century, our campus is reopening to allow individuals a minimum of sixteen Earth years…”.

Reading this, it feels like a safe bet that we will follow the class that was admitted after the group we met in Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery. On the one hand, my hopes of seeing a Miles O’Brien as a Mr. Feeny arc are dashed, but now my hopes for more Sylvia Tilly are very high.

I’m just old enough to remember the 14-year streak of near-constant new Star Trek content, from Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Enterprise. Between today’s news and new seasonal orders for Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds and ProdigyI feel a lot better about the future of my favorite space show.
